Lila Rodriguez Ceramics

My ceramic practice is rooted in curiosity, process, and passion for the material itself. I work predominantly on the wheel producing refined functional shapes, often pushing the pieces to a point of near failure. This practice allows for experimental moments that transform functional pieces into sculpture. Using a variety of handbuilding techniques and expressive surface design, I’m exploring ways to bring emotional and visual depth and personal significance into each piece.

While my skills grow, I am striving to maintain a level of spontaneity and gestural quality that defines my early work. The ability to practice non attachment and accept what happens through the process are themes of my relationship with clay. My use of rich color and textures create pieces that reflect a playful escapism and reverence for queer beauty. Alongside this, I incorporate reflective journaling and poetic writing into my studio practice to track idea generation and emotional shifts and to deepen the narrative behind each piece.

I’m originally from Sedona and now based in Phoenix, where I’ve met the most amazing community of artists. Honestly, they’ve been inspiring me since before I ever touched clay. I feel so lucky to be part of a caring, creative, DIY scene that constantly blows me away with its heart and talent.

These days, you’ll usually find me working out of the Phoenix College studio, surrounded by another group of incredible folks who lift me up and push me to grow—not just as an artist, but as a person.

I really believe in the power of people coming together. I think art and community care can create real, positive change. Phoenix is full of talented, generous, and kind people, and I’m always looking for ways to give back to the city that’s given me so much—through teaching, collaboration, and sharing my work with others.
